Malayali in London ~ Part-18

Chapter -5:

...Winter Break...

(December, the start of winter break.)

“How’re you going to spend your vacation?” Theo asks me on the way home. That leaves me thinking, “I don’t know, I mean it would be nice to visit Thiruvananthapuram, but my father has some really important surgeries so we can’t go and besides it would be best if we went there during spring break, the weather is a lot nicer then,” I tell him. He scratches his head, “well, I hope your father has some important surgery then too, not that I don’t want you to visit your home but it’s just that my birthday is during spring break and I want you to be there.” Theo makes that stupid face again as he says that and I can’t help but laugh, “I hope he does, too.” We laughed for a while, and he told me that his birthday was on the thirteenth of April, apparently, he’s about half a year older than me. “When’s your birthday?” He asks me, “The twenty-first of December,” I answer. He gets lost in thought for a few seconds, “Well, that’s near Christmas and during winter break, it’s pretty soon. What are planning to do on your birthday?” Theo asks.

“Nothing special,” I tell him. I have absolutely no plans for my birthday. “Back in Thiruvananthapuram, we used to have a family feast on my birthday, and then head off to the beach for stargazing. We’ll still have the feast, but I can’t exactly go stargazing on the beach in London.” I explain. Theo frowns at that thought, “That sounds way more amazing and special than a simple party. But you have friends now, you don’t want to celebrate with them?”

I bite my lower lip, “I don’t know, I don’t have many friends and I wouldn’t prefer a party, rather just a nice fun get-together would be nice, and at night, someplace quiet. The loud noise of the city is very overwhelming.” Theo looks up at the sky, lost in thought. He stays like that for a few moments and then turns to me, “Well, maybe we could do just that!” I’m confused, “what do you mean?” Theo perks up at the thought of whatever he seems to be planning and says, “I want to talk to your brother, only then can I make this happen, can I come over tonight?” Alright, now I’m really confused, but I tell him yes anyway. It would be nice to have something to look forward to on my birthday.

I wave goodbye to Theo and walk over to my house. He said that he would come to my house around six o’clock. I knock at the door and, as usual, my mother opens it. My mother recently got a job in the local high school as a maths teacher. She had been teaching in Thiruvananthapuram as well, so I wasn’t surprised that she was accepted really quickly. My mother’s really good at math. Because of her job, she now comes home just about ten to fifteen minutes before I do. I have some snacks and chat with my mother for a while and then go up to my room. I sit down to do a few of my assignments.

Two hours go by with me doing my assignments. I get up and stretch. I walk over to my bookshelf and pick up the last book I was reading. I just have a few pages left. I sit down on the swing and read. Five minutes later, I’m finished. I place the book back on the shelf and look for something else to read. I come to realize that I’ve read every book on my shelf. Well, it’s vacation time so it wouldn’t hurt to go and buy a few new books. I think to myself. I grab my scarf and head downstairs. I walk over to the living room, “could I borrow some cash?” I ask my mother. She turns to me and asks me what I need it for and I tell her that I’m going to buy some new books and she hands me a few pounds. I go to a nearby bookshop and head straight to the section of fiction. I grabbed six books, though I wanted to get a couple more, this was all I could read in this break. Yes, I know what you’re thinking, there are so many! But let me tell you, I’m a very fast reader.

Indrakshi seems like an interesting character; an introverted bookworm who has struggles with being respectful. I think you wrote her as a reflection of yourself cause only a person in reality can be this interesting, fiction characters normally have a plane personality. Am I right? 😳😅
