Malayali in London ~ Part-24

Chapter -6:

...Indrakshi's Birthday...

It’s six thirty and I’m sitting on a bench in the quiet hallway of the hospital where my brother works with a notebook on my lap. It’s dark outside and I’m writing the next scene of Return as I wait for my brother. There are clouds in the sky outside and it might snow tonight. Cold winds are blowing straight through the doors which open and close as people walk in and out. I close my notebook and pen and put them back in my bag as my brother comes walking towards me. “Happy birthday Akshi, sorry to keep you waiting, the patient had a weird sort of problem with his skin,” Will says standing in front of me. I look up at his face and say, “Well, maybe you could have taken the day off like Dad and Sawyer.” William makes a huffing noise from his throat and says, “Well, I wouldn’t have any twelve-hour surgeries if I didn’t take the day off and nor was I going to spend the day with you,” I look off to the side and say, “it wouldn’t have hurt if you did, like back when you were unemployed.” William lets out a sigh and sits down to my left, “I know a lot has changed over the past few months, Indrakshi, and I know that it’s hard adjusting, but you eventually will. And no matter how much changes, I’ll still be by your side, OK? Now come here,” he pulls me in for a hug, I look up at him and say, “And no matter how much changes, I’ll still disrespect you.” He laughs, “Oh I know that isn’t going to change even when we have grandchildren.”

“I guess that we’ll be an excellent example of how a brother and sister should be for them,”

“Yes, an excellent example.”

We laugh and walk to his car and he drives us home.

.       .       .

William tells me to stay in my room until he calls me down and he hangs his coat on the coathanger. I shrug but agree to it anyway, if he has anything planned it’s going to involve a gathering so I’d better get ready. I know that my grandparents won’t be coming, they’re on the other of the city right now. I also know that Twyla is definitely coming, she would never miss a chance to party. I walk up to my room and change into the clothes Mum had asked me to wear. Mum really gets my love for books, because I totally look like bookworm Hermoine from Harry Potter. It’s a simple outfit, a nice green top and skirt with stockings. The only thing I needed was sandy brown hair and a wand and you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between me and Hermoine.

I walk down the stairs and almost bump into my brother in the hallway, “what’re you doing down here?” He asks and I roll my eyes, “Relax, I’m not going into the living room, I’m headed out to the church.” William nods and begins to walk towards the living room while I move to the door, “hey Akshi,” he turns around and says, I look up at him as I’m tying the laces of my boots, William smiles and looks at his while saying, “you look really beautiful tonight, sis, and be careful outside, it might snow.” I smile and reply, “Thanks, I will.” I put my coat on and walk out of the house towards the church, which is more than likely isolated right now.

.       .       .

I turn to see two kids laughing and chasing each other while their parents savour the sight of their childhood innocence. The sight makes me smile. It makes me happy and sad at the same time. Seeing these kids reminds me of when William and I used to chase each other. I would pinch him or mess his hair up or just simply annoy him for no reason, and then he would get up and run after me for revenge. He was never all that active, he would chase me all around the house and still not catch me. I loved taking advantage of the fact that I was more athletic than him. It makes me sad that I can no longer enjoy those moments, but it makes me happy to see that someone else is. I give a slight laugh and turn to walk towards the gate of the church. The voice of the choir fills my ears as I walk in. I move down the aisle towards the seats in front. I sit down and listen to the choir sing. The church is just behind the park where I met Theo, it’s a very beautiful place, and not in a religious way. I understand nothing about Christian culture, but when the church is quiet, it makes the place a sight to behold.

Yes, there are temples in London, but Indrakshi doesn't live near them. And besides, even if she is a south-Indian, don't forget that she is also half British and half Christian. Either way, you will come to know in the upcoming parts that Indrakshi is a secular person who doesn't follow any one religion. She likes the peace and quiet in the church in the evening and that is the reason she went there, peace wasn't an excuse. I normally wouldn't have replied to this because it could give spoilers but I hope you won't think of it as a disappointment now.
