Malayali in London ~ Part-41

Chapter -11:

...Prize...

I swear that Mr Walton has the biggest heart in the world. I called him again once I got a little break from work. “Hey, Mr Walton!” I said once he picked up. “Hey, Miss Harvey! How are you?”

“I’m fine Mr Walton. What about you?”

“Ah, well, I’m doing extremely good. I’m especially happy that you got selected you the booker prize. Are you wondering why I submitted your book for the prize?” I nod, even though I know he can’t see me. He slightly laughs like he knows I did that and continues, “Well, I had multiple reasons to. Firstly, I loved your novel, it was a heart-touching story. Secondly, you were so young yet still did amazing work, it was inspiring. I want more young authors to be inspired by you. Thirdly, you started out from scratch. You bought my bookstore and gave it a whole new identity. You started a business in what you love and you managed it. Just look at it! It’s amazing! And most of all, you’re humble. Even after becoming a bestselling author and having a successful business with many employees who work under you, you still sit behind the counter of that bookstore you had begun with. It tells a lot about your character, Miss Harvey. You deserve this award, you should know it.” I smile with tears of joy in my eyes. “Thank you so much,” I whisper before ending the call. Like I’ve already said, Mr Walton has the biggest heart of them all. He even answered my question without me having to ask it.

.       .       .

I walk up onto the stage and collect my award. They asked me to speak so I grabbed the mike and spoke, “Well, I know I’m an author and it is my job to describe stuff with a clever choice of words but I can’t describe how I feel at this moment. Saying that I am so happy that I could cry would be putting it lightly. I’m just as happy right now as I was shocked when I found out I was selected. My publisher, Mr Walton had informed me about it. He could have submitted many other books and novels for the prize but he chose mine, I’ll forever be grateful for that.” I look at Mr Walton who is beaming with pride as he looks up at me.

“I’m seriously happy for everyone who supported me. I am so grateful that I had a family that approved of me choosing to become an author and helped me become one. I hope that everyone who wants to try and become an author gets the same kind of family.” I look at my parents to see my father crying with joy. I want to rush off of the stage now and give him a hug.

I try to finish it off quickly, “I can’t tell you what it feels like to become one of the authors who’ve received this award so I won’t burden you with my incomprehensible explanations. I want to say no more so I’m off.” I say before handing the mike off to the anchor and rushing down the stage. I gave my father the hug I had the urge to give on stage. “I’m so proud of you. So proud.” He says as he strokes my hair and kisses me on my forehead. I pull away and turn to my right then gasp. Sawyer picks me up and swirls me around before giving me a kiss that says he’s really happy for me. I laugh after he pulls away. William gives me a hug after and Sarah follows. Aksh hugs my hips since he’s short saying, “Congratulations Appachi!” I kneel down so he can hug me properly, “thank you so much Aksh!”

Jennie, Theo, Sawyer and I had a nice celebration at Sawyer's house by ourselves the next day. It was amazing. Theo had taken a few days off of work so that he could come for the ceremony. It’s the evening of the last day of his leave and Theo’s leaving for Birmingham today. We wave him goodbye at the station as his train begins moving and then go home. we drop Jennie off at her house and then Sawyer turns to me, “Do you want me to drop you home too?” I shake my head, “Yeah, but maybe after a midnight drive. I’m in a seriously good mood and I want to enjoy tonight..” He makes a humph sound as he turns to the road, holding back a smile.
