Chapter -6:
...Indrakshi's Birthday...
I gather all the jars with the fairy lights from the living room as my father and William fix the order of the room. They all wish me happy birthday once again before I go up to my room. I kick the door close as my hands are full of jars. I set them around my room and as I’m doing that, I see that on each jar, there is a note hanging with a message from the person who made it.
Hope you enjoy the day! You’re a lot more fun to be
with than my brother, I hope we can hang out again someday.
~ Arienne
Happy Birthday, Indrakshi! Seriously? Why is your name
so hard to spell? Anyway, you’re always on my list of best friends, hope you
have an amazing birthday!
~ Twyla
Happy birthday Akshi! Your brother’s always by your
side, I hope the celebration made you less homesick and if you ever feel
homesick again, you can tell me, and I’ll remake the whole Thiruvananthapuram beach
if it makes you happy.
~ William
The stars smile when they look at you, sweetheart,
that’s why they twinkle. You’ve become so much sweeter, and wiser than I ever
thought you could be and your beauty can only be matched by the crescent moon
in the clear night sky. (What do you think of my writing? Is it as good as
yours?) Happy birthday!
~ Mum
Happy birthday my little star, may all the wishes you
wish to the shooting stars come true. You have so much potential in you, may it all shine
as bright as the stars at night! I love you and I always will.
~ Dad
Happy birthday Indrakshi! Hope you had a wonderful
day, and that seeing these stars shine in your room made you feel close to
home. But you are at home, you just need to convince your heart of the same.
You’re the best friend I hoped to find and I hope this bond between us grows
stronger and deeper. May all your wishes come true tonight and every night.
~ Theo
I smile reading these messages, they’re so
heartwarming. I feel so lucky to have people who care so much about me in my
life. I’m forever grateful for that.
. . .
I’ve changed and I’m sitting on my bed, reading. I close
the book just as I receive a text, it’s from Sawyer. I smile looking at my lock
screen. It is the first time that my wallpaper of Vallam Kali didn’t
momentarily make me feel miserable. I open the text and smile even wider as I read
it.
Sawyer: Hey! I know
that everyone left you a note on their jars but I didn’t know about that so
neither did I make one nor did I write you a note. But I wanted to give you a
message anyway.
Sawyer: Happy
birthday! Your smile is the sweetest most precious of them all. It’s a smile I
would kill for. You look insanely beautiful when you’re happy and I want to be
the reason for that happiness. The stars always remind me of you. I see them
twinkle in your eyes, as grey as smoke. Your smoky eyes are like realms I get
lost in, and blades that cut through my gut. I hope that you have the best
birthday every year and the best day every day. Happy birthday! See you on Saturday…
I can’t wait, the next few days are going to be way longer than they should be.
I screenshot that message, knowing I’m going to keep
that for a long time. It's amazing how just a text message can make your heart
expand. I smile so hard that my cheeks hurt and I hold my phone close to my
chest, which is burning with warmth. I’ve never felt this emotion; but whatever
it is, I want him to make me feel it again.
