Malayali in London ~ Part-42

Chapter -11:

...Prize...

(A few months later.)

We’re at William’s house. And by ‘we’ I mean me, Sawyer and Jennie. William is at work. It seems as if good luck is raining down on all of us recently. Sawyer got promoted to CEO last week and Sarah got a pretty big client today. My mother is cooking as Aksh asks her at least fifteen questions every minute. She just smiles and tries to answer each question that comes her way. We’re talking about all this prosperity when a thought comes to my mind. “Hey, Sarah!” I say. Sarah looks up at me indicating that she’s listening. “Too bad you’re already married, otherwise you could have proposed to William like he proposed to you when he hit a milestone in his career,” I say making a crafty smile. Sarah blushes and hangs her head down to hide her face with her hair, laughing. Jennie is the only one who seems a bit miserable in her laugh. I understand, she must have been hoping for something like that when Theo got the news that he’s getting promoted in a few months.  Sawyer’s voice breaks our laugh, “Touché, Indrakshi, Touché.” His expression suddenly becomes serious and the room grows quiet. Sawyer gets up and searches for something in his pocket saying, “And I guess that in that case.” Then, he does something absolutely unexpected. Jennie squeals like she’s sixteen when Sawyer kneels down on one knee and says, “Remember what I said when William asked when I was planning to propose to you?” I intentionally roll my eyes and cross my arms across my chest, messing with him. I’m holding back a smile when I say, “Of course, I do, dummy,” he makes a face and says, “That was a rhetorical question, you didn’t need to answer it.” I shrug and listen as he continues like that never happened, “I had said that ‘I am waiting for an important day, I’ll propose when I get that kind of a chance,’ and well, I sort of missed that day since I should’ve done it the day you got the prize but nevermind that. I’ve decided on today instead. You and I both have hit milestones in our own individual lives recently, I think it is time we hit a milestone in our life together. So? Would you marry me if I asked you to?” I can’t believe this is actually happening! But I’m still going to mess with him, “I can’t say yes if you don’t ask me,” I say trying my best to hold back the wide smile that wants to spread across my face. Sawyer slightly laughs, “Ah! You’re impossible but fine! Will you marry me?” I have to fight back the urge to kiss him as I just stand there in silence for twenty seconds before Sawyer stands up and throws his arms in the air in defeat, “that wasn’t a rhetorical question! You were supposed to answer it!” I laugh. “Alright, alright. Yes, I’ll marry you. You happy?” I say between my laughs when he makes an annoyed face. He smiles and walks up to me. Jennie is still squealing like she’s sixteen in the background with Sarah laughing. Sawyer puts the ring on my finger. He then threads his hand through mine and gives me a deep kiss. That kiss is the beginning of our happily ever after.

Jennie rushes and gives me a hug after Sawyer pulls back. Sarah stands beside Sawyer and says, “You did great. William’s proposal wasn’t even nearly as good as yours. His was rather quite cheesy, to be honest.” We all laughed so hard after that comment. Jennie demands that I show her the ring on my finger, which I do. It’s a beautiful silver band with green stone. Green, my favourite colour. Sawyer is so considerate.

I’m still in disbelief about what just happened. It somehow still feels like those few minutes of my life were a dream.
